Single Bed Bases

A single bed base is the narrowest and shortest of the standard Australian bed base sizes. It offers 92cm x 188cm of sleeping surface. As it can fit in most rooms and comfortably sleep a child or small solo adult sleeper, you’ll often find it in kids’ rooms or guest rooms.

If you’re working with a particularly tight space, check the individual product dimensions before buying.

The key differences are width and length:

• Single bed base: 92cm wide x 188cm long
• Long single bed base: 92cm wide x 203cm long
• King single bed base: 107cm wide x 203cm long

So, with a long single, you get the same width as a standard single plus 15cm extra length. With a king single, you get that extra length with an extra 15cm of width too.

A single bed base can cost you anywhere from around $80 to $500+. It really comes down to the materials and features it includes.

A basic flat-pack metal or timber base might cost $80–$150. An upholstered single bed ensemble base probably sits between $150 and $400. Then there are premium options, like storage or specialty bases, that can reach the $500 mark or more.

Yes, you don’t need to buy a single bed base and mattress together.

You can pop your existing single mattress on your new bed base if it’s:

• The right size
• Comfortable
• Free of any obvious damage or sagging
• Made for the functions of the base (i.e., made to flex with an adjustable bed base)

A single adjustable base has a motor that moves different sections of the base (and the mattress on top of it) up and down. Depending on the model, you can usually choose to have your head raised, your legs lifted, or a bit of both. An adjustable bed base needs a suitable mattress.

A single ensemble base is a fixed foundation suitable for any same-sized mattress.
